In the biggest fight of his long MMA career, local hero Johnny "Cupcakes" Campbell (21-13) notched a MASSIVE win, taking out one of Bellator's studs. "Cupcakes" finally got the call from the sport's 2nd biggest MMA promotion about a month ago to take on Henry "OK" Corrales (18-5), a 145 pound fighter who was dropping down to 135 for the first time in his career. Corrales, a 12 fight Bellator veteran, had taken on some of the toughest names at 145 in the promotion, and he was tasked to take on one of New England's best, and wildest fighters at bantamweight.
The first round was a very tight round, with both fighters landing. Campbell landed the biggest punch of the fight, wobbling Corrales with a solid punch on the button. "Cupcakes" also proved successful in landing some heavy calf kicks, and showed solid defense with effective head movement, albeit with his hands by his waist. The mystery that is Johnny "Cupcakes" Campbell proved to by an issue for Corrales, as he was having trouble landing big shots as Campbell ducked, dodged, and dived throughout the first stanza.
Campbell seemed to start losing some steam in the 2nd round, with Corrales landing effective punches to the head as he started to solve the curious defense of the Massachusetts based fighter. Corrales' momentum was stopped when Campbell landed a clean uppercut in the pocket and sent Corrales falling to the mat. "Cupcakes" saw an opportunity and jumped on his back as Corrales was clearly still out of it while trying to work his way back to his feet. Campbell recognized that he had his opponent in trouble, took his opponents back, was able to sink in his hooks, and slipped his forearm under Corrales' chin, forcing the big favorite to tap 4:12 into the 2nd round!
A massive win for one of New England's most entertaining and talented fighters in Johnny "Cupcakes' Campbell. Congrats on the massive massive win Johnny! Well deserved! And let's not forget. Johnny Campbell predicted this result when we caught up with him a few weeks ago!
